Vietnam recognises International Driving Permits issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. Most European countries, the UK, Russia and many others issue 1968-format IDPs, which are valid in Vietnam together with your national licence.
Important for US drivers: the United States issues IDPs under the 1949 Geneva Convention, which Vietnam does not recognise. Americans usually need to convert their licence into a Vietnamese one to drive legally — check your situation before you travel.
What you need for the rental agreement
Your passport, national driving licence and a valid IDP. You pay after signing the agreement and inspecting the car; the deposit is $200 or $400 depending on your route.
On the road
Traffic drives on the right. Keep to speed limits and traffic lights, park only where allowed and never drink and drive — Vietnam is very strict about it. Camera fines reach the car owner and are taken from the deposit.
